Hosting
Just as your word processor documents and digital photos are stored on your computer's hard drive ready for you to open them, a website has to be physically stored somewhere in the world, ready for visiting computers to access it. SEO
SEO stands for 'Search Engine Optimisation', which is a collective term for the techniques used to get web pages high up in the results pages of search engines such as Google. Owl web design will work with you to select effective keywords (see below) for your site that will increase traffic (the number of visitors) to your site.
Keywords
If web users are not visiting a specific web site, they type words and phrases into search engines in order to find the information they are looking for, e.g. 'Web Design Sussex', 'Taxis Lewes', 'Insurance Brokers Sussex'. Owl Web Design will work with you to select words and phrases relevant to your site that potential visitors may use. These will become your keywords, and Owl Web Design will set up your site to increase its chances of appearing high up in search results when they are used.
Domain Name
A domain name is the name of your website, usually preceded by 'www.' (Our domain name is www.OwlWebDesign.co.uk). Owl Web Design will register a domain name on your behalf, under your name. You can register a domain name for a year or more (the maximum is usually 10 years), and you can register country-specific domain names, such as www.YourSite.co.uk, or international domains, such as www.YourSite.com . If you are new to buying domains, you may want to talk to Owl before doing so, as choosing the right domain name can be very beneficial to the marketing and SEO of your site.
CMS
CMS stands for 'Content Management System'. This allows website owners to add or edit content (text / photos, etc.) on their websites even if they have little or no programming knowledge. To have a CMS custom designed for your site can be prohibitively expensive, but thanks to the popularity of open-source CMS such as Wordpress and Drupal, CMS has become much more obtainable.
PPC
PPC stands for 'Pay Per Click', and is a form of web based advertising. Based on the Google Adwords system, our PPC Advertising Management service will allow you to target the kind of visitor you hope to attract to your site by selecting the keywords that they are likely to use (e.g. 'hairdresser Lewes', 'best mortgage', 'toys for 3 year olds', etc.) when searching for the products or services that you offer.

Traffic
Another term for the amount of visitors to your site.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator, or basically a web address written in full, i.e. http://www.owlwebdesign.co.uk/web-terminology.html (the URL for this page).
HTML
HyperText Markup Language - the language used to create web pages.
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets – computer code that acts on an HTML document to affect the web page's layout and appearance. Used as a means of separating the bare information
contained within an HTML document from the additional information needed to determine how it looks in a browser.
Flash
A program invented by Adobe, mainly used to provide multimedia such as animations and music to web pages, but which also can be used to create sophisticated web applications.
MP3
A compressed audio file.
